CANOE TRIP GUIDELINES
What to Bring

Shoes or sandals: These MUST have ankle and toe straps and be securely attached to your feet. Please do not wear slip-on shoes. Water shoes are acceptable if they have a Velcro or strong elastic band holding the shoe on.

Shoes that are ok
sneakers
Tevas water shoes

Shoes that are NOT ok
flip flops

slip on shoes

Clothes: Loose comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. Cotton is not preferred in cool weather (cotton holds water that cools you as it evaporates). Wear layers of clothing so that you can easily add or remove clothing to meet changing weather conditions and activity levels. Wool and synthetic materials, such as fleece, are desirable because they provide warmth when wet.

  • Long pants or shorts (nylon or fleece preferable)
  • Loose-fitting short-sleeved shirt
  • Light-weight jacket
  • More layers to meet expected weather conditions

  •   Sunscreen (daytime programs)
    Strap to hold your glasses/sunglasses
    Water bottle (1-2 quarts recommended)
Rain gear (raincoat is preferred over ponchos)
Change of clothes/shoes (so you can wear clean, dry clothes home)

    Optional:
  • Bug repellent
  • Snack and/or soda
  • Waterproof camera
  • Field guides
  • Hat/Sunglasses
  • Medical/Liability Release form
A medical/liability release form must be filled out by each participant. Individuals under age 18 must have a parent/guardians signature. The form is available on our web site under Forms.

    What not to bring
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Flip flops or other slip-on footwear
  • Pets

  • What to Remember

    • Refund policy:
Refunds are given only if the trip is cancelled by Hemlock Overlook. Cancellations will happen only if extremely severe weather is forecast. Another weather condition that would cause a trip to be cancelled is when the probability of hypothermia is high (when the sum of the water temperature and air temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit is less than 120). For example, if the water temperature is 60 F and the air temperature is 59 F, the sum total is 119 and the trip will not take place.

    • Bathroom facilities are available at the beginning and end of your program.

    • A snack bar is available at Fountain Head Regional Park.

    • For more information please visit the Fountainhead Regional Park website.
