Our permanent orienteering course, developed
in partnership with the Quantico Orienteering Club, has both
a beginner and a challenging Score Course.
If you want to use the permanent course for yourself or your group, you can
purchase a laminated map and a scoring sheet for either the Beginner or the
Score course. Contact our administrative office for more information.
This 4-hour program is intended for the novice and will teach your group
the nuts and bolts of reading topographic maps and using a compass as a
navigation tool. Our 20-marker permanent orienteering course is situated
throughout 225 acres of park land at Hemlock Overlook.
|
The course starts with an icebreaker followed
by instruction and map reading skills. Group participants will learn how
to distinguish map scales and contour lines, along with the anatomy of a
compass and how to utilize this simple tool. Then group members are able
to apply their skills and put them to the test on Hemlock's parkland as they
navigate around the orienteering course using a map and compass.
