About Hemlock Overlook’s Center for Professional Development

Hemlock Overlook is operated jointly by George Mason University and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and is located within 225 acres of parkland in Fairfax County. It serves approximately 25,000 people a year, making it the largest, most popular challenge course in the United States.  Organizations that participate in Hemlock Overlook programs include school groups, universities, professional organizations, and teams from religious, community, and sports organizations.

Team Development Course

The course fits comfortably inside 90 acres of open fields and forested parkland and features more than 80 constructed activities.  With more than 500 activities available, Hemlock Overlook offers everything from warm-up initiatives to the TOTAL TEAM CHALLENGE™.

Warm up activities engage participants and orient the team to problem solving and task-focused challenges.  Some of the constructed activities include a rope swing that transports team members from one platform to another; three lifewalks-wire tightropes 12 inches off the goround; three spider’s webs, bungee-cord woven webs hanging between two trees; and the TOTAL TEAM CHALLENGE™.

Professional Affiliations

Operated by George Mason University, Hemlock Overlook benefits from being part of a large university while being a recognized Experience-Based Training and Development (EBTD) provider.  The Center is active in both the experiential learning and challenge course industries and is accredited by the American Camp Association.  In addition, the Center is a participating member of the American Society for Training and Development Association of Experiential Education, Association for Psychological Type, and Association for Challenge Course Technology.
