Jointly offered by The Freshmen Center and Hemlock Overlook
Project Peak is a two-phase, one-credit course, offered only
in your first semester at Mason. The first phase consists
of a six-day wilderness adventure trip held the week before
your first semester begins. You and your trip mates will kayak
down the beautiful Potomac River, rock climb the sheer walls
of Cooper's Rock State Park, raft down the Youghiogheny River,
camp in tents, and cook on camp stoves.
The second phase is designed as a follow-up to the trip.
You and your trip mates will meet as a University
100 class once every week for the duration of the first
semester. Here you will build on the foundations that were
laid on your presemester adventure and cover topics that will
continue to focus on your success in college.
Some of the discussion topics introduced will include outdoor living skills,
leadership, developing community, setting goals and priorities,
developing and evaluating personal relationships, and understanding
values and choices. To help continue student's success in
college, classes will meet every week of the first semester.
Topics covered during these sessions will include: identifying
learning styles, healthy lifestyles, time management, academic
skills in college, and exploring careers.
No experience is necessary to participate in Project Peak, only your quest
for adventure, willingness to learn, and the desire to have fun. Don’t
be left out! Space is limited for these adventures. Sign up today by completing
the registration form and mailing it to the Freshman Center.
We look forward to hearing from you!
