Chaperone Responsibilities
Chaperones may be teachers, group leaders, parents or other adults who accompany your students. Chaperones do not pay for program fees. They are expected to pay in advance for other services such as meals and overnight accommodations. We require one chaperone for every team of 10-12 students.

Upon arrival and following your student’s orientation, your chaperones will receive a brief introduction to Hemlock Overlook and an overview of the day. A chaperone’s role is to:

  • provide additional adult support for student behavior issues
  • dispense medication if requested by your group contact
  • assist in case of an emergency.

You will often have more than one chaperone per team of students. Please ask them not to carry on conversations amongst themselves. This can be very distracting to a team of students. Chaperones should not coach students while they are working together. Cheerleading support should be kept to a minimum.

Do congratulate a team when they finish an event, but remember this is their day and in no way should a chaperone become part of an event. We ask all adults who chaperone to exercise a lot of patience and to quietly observe so that the students can fully engage in their challenges while at Hemlock Overlook. Finally, your students will learn the most when they experience problems and solve them, encounter frustrations and overcome them as part of a team. Watch it happen! Their success is our success.

Please print our Chaperone Information form for your teachers and chaperones. It is an interactive guide that includes tips about what your students may experience during their day at Hemlock Overlook. It is also an excellent tool to use when you get back to your classroom to discuss and process the student’s experience here.
