School Program Descriptions
Team Development Course

This novel, exciting, and fun learning environment helps create a sense of personal responsibility and ownership of learning. With the ultimate goal of improving the classroom learning environment through effective communication and active listening skills, cooperation and group problem solving skills, Hemlock Overlook’s Team Development Course uses a combination of low and high elements and initiatives as a tool for students to gain hands-on experience and knowledge of these important life skills.

Available for grades 5-12.

Total Team Challenge™

The Ultimate Team High Ropes Challenge Course! This is the next generation of challenge course design! Your group of students will start this new program as a set of individuals and finish as an organized team achieving their potential.

Available for grades 9 and up.

Environmental Education

Calling all future biologists, geologists, and ecologists! These exciting programs combine classroom knowledge and hands-on field experience. Give your students the chance to do real science in the outdoors by making observations, collecting data, and analyzing results.

Available for grades 5 and 6.

EARTHQUEST

Bring classroom learning to life! Provide your class an outdoor experience by participating in four investigation stations. Programs designed around the Curriculum Framework of the Virginia SOL.

Available for Grade 3: SOILS, WATER CYCLE, INVESTIGATION, and LIFE FORCES
Available for Grade 4: INVESTIGATION, RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, LIFE PROCESSES, and LIVING SYSTEMS

Combined Program

Your students will have the opportunity to benefit from both of our most requested programs. This one day program includes a 2 hour Environmental Program followed by 4 hours of skill work on the Team Development Course.

Available for grades 5-6.

Program Add-Ons
Orienteering
Get back to the basics with this 4 hour hands-on course. Learn to find your way with a map and compass and master the basics of land navigation. Then practice on our orienteering course. No experience necessary. Price includes instruction, maps and compasses.
Available for grades 7-12

Recreational Canoeing
Deepen your appreciation for the natural world while enjoying a canoe trip on the Occoquan River. Beaver, white tail deer, and great blue heron may be seen. You will be amazed by the beauty and remoteness still hidden in Fairfax County. Price includes American Canoe Association certified guide, basic instruction, life vests, canoes, and Paddles. No experience needed.

Service Project
Enhance a middle/high school teambuilding program by including a student service project. Add dinner and an overnight cabin stay. Follow a hearty breakfast the next morning with participation in Project Mulch. Enjoy lunch in the Lodge before returning to school.
